Overview

Graphic Design Theory and Practice is an examination of the critical practices that shape graphic design focusing on the development of skills for thinking, discussing and writing about the discipline. This course covers the theoretical ideas of the 20th century from early modernism to post-structuralism and explores the ethical, cultural and social issues of contemporary graphic design practice.

This course will enable you to build an awareness of the influences shaping how people interpret content/messages/information and how designers influence (consciously and unconsciously) the construction of meaning. The course will familiarize you with theories relevant to the practice of graphic design with the goal of: deepening your understanding of the principles supporting theory; helping you build connections to larger issues in visual culture; and expanding your understanding of the broad context of design.

In addition, this course will foster your ability to: critically analyze designed objects; understand how design effects and is effected by surrounding contexts; make connections that will inform your own work; and establish a foundation for scholarly work.
